Darkwave Battle Royale – Peter Murphy vs. Gary Numan

Friday December 4th, I went out to The Phantasy in Lakewood, OH once again for the latest installment of 9 of Clubs reunion night.  Three great DJ’s spinning a time warp vortex of the best 80’s and 90’s Goth, Industrial, House, New Wave and Darkwave music out there. Lots of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Thrill Kill Kult, Ministry, Front 242, and more.  It was by far the absolute best reunion night yet with music and attendance. I danced so much, I was sore the next day. Definitely…

I Miss My MTV! – Nighttime Music & Variety Shows of the 80’s

When I was a teenager, I always looked forward to my weekends – that’s when I got to watch the totally awesome programming of the early to mid-1980’s on cable. My parents didn’t believe in cable TV, so if I wanted to watch MTV, USA or TBS, I had to go over my brother’s house. Anyways, I digress… A couple weeks ago, I ventured out to The Phantasy in Lakewood, OH and attended The Cure vs. Depeche Mode dance night. This (awesome amazing) night of music was DJ’d by Cleveland greats Tim Smith and Evan Nave….

Brooding Burgundy & The Melancholies

I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but this time of year always forces me back inside myself to think and contemplate life and its many complexities. Fall is my absolute favorite season, yet with this amazingly colorful season comes what I like to call The Melancholies.  This year especially, I fear the ever pending winter months ahead. I think back to not so long ago when my dreaded enemy, Depression, had me in its wicked and relentless grip, refusing to release me. I even resorted to going back on head…

Public Display of Music

My Saturday ritual for the past year and half or so has been to get up early, grab my computer and take a seat at my local coffeehouse. The baristas know I order a large cappuccino with an extra shot of espresso and a lavender vanilla scone. Sometimes I switch it up and get a dirty chai, but lately I’ve craved just a cappuccino with extra cinnamon sprinkled on top of the frothy milk goodness.  Oberlin College is back in session, as the coffeehouse is in full buzz with…
