Summer Night Solitude

henry rollins loneliness

I sit here in silence and solitude, watching the clouds make their journey across the sky. I am mesmerized by their ever changing beauty.

One looks like a heart.

I watch as it stretches and morphs bigger then smaller, passing ever so slowly through the sky. Eventually it dissolves into the other clouds and passes away.

It is forever lost in the glow of a midsummer sunset – mixing, mingling and now forming into other shapes.

Other dreamers like me will see what they need to from these beauteous weather wonders.

What is on the other side of these clouds? Perhaps the heart moved there, to the bright light and promise of a new day…

Another somewhat heart-shaped cloud crosses the horizon but it is even shorter lived as the winds have picked up. Lost forever in the billowy waves of cotton candy fluff.

The sunsets are coming earlier and descending faster as the days move onward, marching into autumn. This is bittersweet to me. I love the long days and warm nights, but I also love the sights, sounds and smells of autumn, along with the crisp, cool breezes.

The birds dance in the twilight as if they haven’t a care in the world.

It is a glorious sunset this evening over the lake. The bright orange glow sets over the rushing waters bidding this day goodbye. Glorious rays outstretched into the horizon scream from the clouds as if to say, “No not yet! I don’t want to go!”

I spy another heart cloud in the distance. It glows like fire from the sunset, almost blackened on the inside.

My heart is like this cloud and burns with the fire of a thousand sunsets.

Darkness descends as the winds pick up, tossing and whipping my hair like mad. These are the winds of autumn come too soon.

Summer will return in a few days, but I have tonight to get me by until autumn makes her graceful and triumphant return in a few short months.

I close my eyes and breathe in deep, capturing this moment, burning it into my memory.

I live for nights like this.
